Confrontation

The world is moving. We are on the verge of a radical change. The change is not only visible in the change of the climate and the loss of biodiversity, we humans are also on a threshold.

What is needed now is a confrontation with the question: do we want to hold on to the old thinking of human dominance over all living beings and limitless growth, or do we want to set out to become partners with the Earth?

At the WorldEthicForum, we lay new ethical and social foundations for a respectful approach to our world.

The WorldEthicForum asks the crucial questions

What does it mean to be not the ruler but a friend of the earth? What economy, what science, what financial system, what education, what agriculture, what communication, what collaborations are needed now?

How can man change without an eco-dictatorship and a  regime of fear?

What visions are there, what new individual and common motivations which go beyond the pursuit of happiness?

Is there a new point of attraction that inspires the well-being of all people and beings on this earth instead of exclusively material prosperity? What leads out of the impasse of climate crisis and species extinction into a new relationship, a meaningful partnership with the Earth?

These questions will be discussed philosophically and practically at the WorldEthicForum. Concrete approaches to these questions will be deliberated philosophically and practically at the WorldEthicForum. Concrete approaches to solutions will be presented. From a sustainable culture to a common good economy, to sufficiency, i.e. the endeavour to consume  a minimum of  raw materials and energy. Ideas and models on all these issues will be presented, discussed and debated. The generation of the future will have its say.

Our philosophy

The consciousness of interconnectedness arises from the everyday experience of a common convergingvitality of all beings on this earth.

This experience and the willingness to draw personal and social consequences from it has the power to overcome the dualism of nature and culture and to meet the pressing questions and needs of our time with sustainable answers and solutions, ultimately recognising the need for change so that we humans see ourselves as part of the earth and not as its rulers.

Philosophical foundations of a comprehensive ethics of the earth

In the philosophical part, the focus is on the central question: to what extent can we approach the contradiction that the earth continues to exist even without a right, from a philosophical point of view. After 350,000 years of robbery as homo sapiens, humans have suddenly reached the point where they cannot continue to live without the recognition of this right, because otherwise they would deprive themselves of their livelihood.

This raises questions about the opposition between nature and culture, ecodictatorship and freedom, and the fundamental debate about whether humans can and want to change.

This is what Andreas Weber, Minna Salami and Bayo Akomolafe will focus on.

Concepts of social, economic and ecological sustainability

The second focus relates to the question of solutions and consequences that bring about a recognition of the right of Gaia (to use Latour’s term) in terms of  society, politics, the economy and the food production system.

How can/should we live and act as individuals and as states if this right of the Earth is justiciable and taken seriously, e.g. as the basis of human rights and international law?

This focus is clearly oriented towards solution and practice. This includes the common good economy by Christian Felber, who will give a lecture and a workshop – also – for the local entrepreneurs and community representatives of the Engadin. Otto Scharmer will present his U-theory at the WorldEthicForum. Martin Ott, author of “Understanding Cows”, will speak about people’s deep longing for a more respectful coexistence with farm animals.

Successful projects

In the third focus area, we offer a platform to various projects that have already implemented this respect for the right of the earth in terms of consciousness and practice. For this purpose, we were able to engagethe World Future Council, which will hold its council meeting in Pontresina after the WorldEthicForum. Representatives – mainly from the South – will present their ideas and their implementation. Auma Obama from Kenya and Vananda Shiva from India have already confirmed their participation.

Music and art

On the two evenings we will listen to music that we are convinced will open up and connect new synapses. This includes a world premiere by Gérard Zinstag. Other performances and projections are planned.

“Upside Down”

Above all, we see the spiritual question of human transformation. Is a reversal, even a metamorphosis of the human being possible? How? Is it technology that overcomes technology? Is it a new faith that can change the world and, above all, people? Is it we who can relate to the universe by relationships, by life through learning to die, aliveness by experiencing unity? Are we the climate? After so many centuries of successful predation rewarded by development – from the extinction of mammoths to the decimation of bees and earthworms – what forces could inspire us to suddenly think, strive for and realise a reversal?

This question of a grant for the earth and human life is intended as a main topic for a later forum. However, it should hover over the first one like a good spirit, as a perspective and hope.
